Planning a Green Frugal Wedding for Less Than $5000

Bride and Groom | Source: mags20_eb on FlickrWell folks, its official…I’m married! The wedding was absolutely perfect! Perfect weather, perfect setting, perfect guests – perfect day! We couldn’t have asked for more. Oddly enough, my fiancee-now-wife and I planned almost identical surprises for each other during our vows. If that’s not made-to-be, then I don’t know what is.

Over the last few months, I’ve posted about some of the decisions we made regarding invitations, food, the venue, guests and dishware. Now that the wedding is done, and we’ve added up all the expenses, I’m going to break it down for you and show you how we threw a green wedding for 75 people for less than $5000. In actuality, our final amount is closer to $6000, but that’s only because we received a few financial gifts in the weeks leading up to the wedding, and so I decided to buy completely new wedding attire from head to toe, and we decided to stay in a bed and breakfast the night before and after the wedding. If not for the gifts, I would have worn a suit I already had and we would have slept at home and the wedding would have cost less than $5000.

Comparison of Foreign ATM Fees Charged by Canadian Banks

ATM | Source: Modern Relics on FlickrPicture this – you’re on vacation, enjoying the sun and sand, or maybe the snow, in some foreign land. You brought some cash with you but you need more so you go to the ATM and withdraw some spending money. Everything seems to be in good order. Then you get home and realize your bank charged you $5.00 for the privilege of withdrawing that money! And since you were gone for a while, and had to make multiple withdrawals, these transactions really added up. I know I’ve been hurt by this before. When I went backpacking for three months in 2010, I spent over $100 on foreign ATM fees to withdraw money throughout my trip. The kicker – had I done some research, this could have been entirely avoidable! In today’s post, I’m going to compare the foreign ATM fees charged by all the big five Canadian banks, and highlight a few alternative options as well. With a little insight and planning, you can go abroad and spend your money the right way – enjoying your trip!

Planning a Green Frugal Wedding – Food

Wedding Food | Source: avlxyz on FlickrLast week, I wrote the first instalment of my green, frugal wedding series by talking about how I was foregoing traditional paper invitations in favour of electronic invites and wedding websites. Today, I’m going to talk about food and drink, another issue where you can either stick to traditions, be green, be frugal or better yet, be both.

As I said last week, being either frugal or environmentally responsible when it comes to weddings often requires you to challenge the status quo or the established wedding traditions, and food is no exception when it comes to this. In our case, we are challenging the established traditions about as much as possible, but I’ll get to that in a second.
